RRFBs: Making Mid-Block Crosswalks Safer

The Problem: Mid-Block Crossings Are Dangerous

In the U.S., nearly 75% of all pedestrian fatalities occur at mid-block crossings— locations between intersections where pedestrians often choose to cross because it’s more direct. These crossings may lack stop signs, traffic signals, or other controls that drivers expect, making them especially dangerous.

Drivers aren’t always looking for pedestrians at these locations, and at higher speeds, they have less time to react. A simple crosswalk with painted lines is often not enough to catch a driver's attention or ensure a safe crossing.

The Solution: RRFBs

An RRFB, or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, is a powerful tool for improving pedestrian safety at these vulnerable mid-block locations.

RRFBs are pedestrian-activated flashing lights mounted below crosswalk signs. When a person wants to cross, the beacon flashes with a bright, high-speed strobe that alerts drivers to stop. The lights are unmistakable, even in poor weather or low-light conditions.

A Safer Carrboro, One Crosswalk at a Time

Carrboro—and towns like it—can dramatically improve pedestrian safety by installing RRFBs at key mid-block locations. These beacons not only help reduce crashes, but also make it easier and more inviting to walk safely through our community.
